Ogden grew up around the transcontinental railroad. Its Historic 25th Street, once lined with railroad hotels and saloons, is now brewpubs, restaurants, galleries and independent shops. Up Ogden Canyon, the Ogden Valley has three ski areas (Snowbasin, host of the 2002 and 2034 Olympic alpine events, Powder Mountain and Nordic Valley) with hiking and mountain biking in summer. An hour or so northwest are Golden Spike National Historical Park, where the rails met in 1869, and Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty on the Great Salt Lake.
